Commentary

Alexander Wyant’s early landscapes were often grand in scale and intention, featuring the rugged picturesqueness of mid-century Hudson River school paintings. Slowly his signature style evolved, influenced by his contact with George Inness and his exposure during European travel to English painter John Constable’s pastoral landscapes and the subtle tones and painterly execution of French Barbizon painting. After 1866, his paintings moved away from detailed examinations of nature toward a more fluid handling of paint and a more subtle palette. Wyant, along with his contemporary Homer Dodge Martin and Inness, were viewed as artists leading American painting toward a softer, more introspective interpretation of landscape.
